■ B. Pronunciation （発音）
●正しい英語発音ができるようになると、英語がはっきり聞こえるようになります。

For Japanese students, learning correct English pronunciation is very
important. Once they master how to correctly pronounce English words,
then they all of a sudden can clearly hear the sounds of spoken English words.
When their English pronunciation is poor, they will not be able to successfully
catch the spoken pronunciation of a native English speaker.

This reasoning may be hypothetically understood by you, but this is
really true because I have been able to confirm that all the Japanese students
that I have taught English pronunciation in the past several years are
telling me that their ears have become sensitive enough to catch the pronunciation
of English words spoken by native people after my students have mastered
fairly good English pronunciation as shown in the following examples.

●日系１世の発音下手からわかるように、日本人の大人にとって英語発音を
学ぶことはなんとむずかしいことかご存知でしょう。

You may probably know that almost all of Nikkei Issei (1st generation
Japanese race who have U.S. citizenships) have poor English pronunciation
while Nikkei Nisei and Nikkei Sansei (2nd and 3rd generation Japanese
who have U.S. citizenships) can speak perfect English.
From this fact you will see how difficult it is to learn correct English
pronunciation for a Japanese adult who starts learning English pronunciation
after living in Japan for many years.

●しかし、英語発音をマスターしてもネイティブが話す英語の意味を理解した
ことにはなりません。英語発音を聞けたとしても、知らない単語は意味が判ら
ないものです。

This mastering of good English pronunciation by my students, however,
does not necessarily mean they have understood the meaning of the English
words that they hear from native English speakers.
None of the English words still not known to him will be understood by him
in meaning even if he clearly can catch the pronunciation of the words.

●日本人にとって英語発音が特に重要である訳は、世界中で日本語とポリネシア語
だけが子音に母音が必ず付いて回る性質を持った言語だからです。

I would like to emphasize that English pronunciation is very important
to a Japanese student of English conversation although it may not be so
to other races.
I have found that the Japanese people are very unique in the world
in their native language pronunciation habit.
In the whole world, it is only the Japanese language and Polynesian language
where each consonant is always linked to a vowel.

●速く発音すると”desks” を”desukusu”と、子音の後に母音を付けてしまう悪い癖
が出てしまうのです。”pick it up”や、さらに難しい”picked it up”は最も舌が
もたつく例です。

For instance, when you can pronounce “desks” exactly as it is spelled,
a Japanese will pronounce this as “desukusu” always adding a vowel after
each consonant.
Japanese ears and tongue are made that way!
To be a little more exact, when a Japanese slowly pronounces “desks”
he can eliminate vowels after “s”, “k” and “s”, but if he speedily
pronounces “desks”, he cannot get out of the bad habit of adding vowels
after consonants, so he does pronounce “desukusu”.
The most tongue-twisting example for a Japanese is “picked it up”.
The present tense “pick it up” is a little easier, but the past tense
“picked it up” is really difficult for a Japanese, and it becomes
more difficult when he has to speak those words faster!

●このことは”desks”などの単語を、ひいては、文全体を言ったり聞いたりする
のに、日本人は時間をよけいにとり、結果的に話される英語のスピードについ
ていけないのです。これは大きなマイナスです。

This means that for a Japanese to pronounce or listen to “desks” takes
a longer time, resulting in longer time to pronounce or listen to the
whole sentence. Thus the Japanese cannot catch up with the fast spoken
English sentences. This is a great disadvantage.
